There are a lot of games that do have full Japanese support, but VNs are very hit or miss (depends on the publisher and how stingy they wanna be with the international market, I think), and if you’re going for anime games, you can just safely assume it has no Japanese text support.
Very much so. Almost every JP origin Steam game I have can be played fully in Japanese (eg with JP subs and JP UI) despite buying on the US store. Only exceptions I can think of off the bat are Dragon Quest XI S and Catherine Classic. Sometimes you’ll have to make the change from inside of Steam and redownload the game though. But I don’t have many VNs nor anime games. For JRPG, action RPG, and action games though you’ll usually be able to play JP versions.
at the bottom right of the game page, there should be a small table with all available language combinations(subs, audio,UI).
Also if you use the extended search feature on steam, you should be able to sort items by language available(and many other options too!)
Games I have (in part) played in Japanese:
The Witcher 3
Thronebreaker
Cyberpunk 2077
Nier:Automata
Thanks for the replies everyone.
Check out Game Gengo’s tier list of steam games for studying Japanese:

So I found this directory pretty helpful as it has a sort function by language. You will have to cross reference it with Steam but it’s probably the most comprehensive list I have seen without going to each games’ “lanuage options” section of the store
I am not sure if it assesses the quality of any Japanese localization but is a good starting point. Bonus points in that the wiki was made as an attempt to catalogue fixes for games and both fan and official localizations are shown

Edit: spelling and addition to last paragraph
There’s still a number of major publishers that regularly engage in おま国 practices on Steam (looking at you Bandai Namco), but the majority of Japanese games do support the original language options. You can always check what languages a game supports on its store page sidebar (looks like [this](https://i.gyazo.com/72ad939663e56b84091c5220938ea833.png)).
Quite a few Japanese visual novels are on steam my personal favorite is Danganronpa and Nekopara
Nekopara is more of a romance/ecchi game amd Danganronpa is a game where students are trapped in a highschool and to get out they have to kill a classmate it has it’s funny moments and has 5 games you can play first one is trigger happy havoc.
I’m playing ATRI (VN) in JP on Steam. It mentioned the languages supported on the store page before buying
I’d recommend Stein’s gate. You can set it to Japanese subtitles by using the properties window for the game in Steam.
It’s even easier than on Xbox (I think). You can pick any supported language when installing the game, no need to change console settings
Resident evil series
Might be interesting to add that you cont have to play Steam games. If you dig around a bit you can play quite a few non-steam visual novels using Japanese locale and Proton!
I got Ni no Kuni, it’s a JRPG, but unfortunately I’m out of disk space to install it (40gb) 😐
You can always check languages on the store page. Little Busters has a cool feature that lets you toggle language while playing even. Always check.
Chrono Trigger is such a classic, s-teir rpg, with great dialogue and story. I’m going through it now in Japanese and I’d say overall it maybe N3/N4
