Where to get a rabies vaccine for a cat?

My fiancée and I are working on preparing her cat to leave for the US, and we’re trying to get all the paperwork in order.

Since Japan has no cats with rabies, though, it’s proving difficult to find a place that vaccinates cats against rabies.

Does anyone know of a place where we can have this done in a straightforward manner without anyone misunderstanding and thinking we don’t need the vaccine because there’s no rabies in Japan?

  1. I dont know what you mean. my dog got her rabies vaccine as a puppy as a requirement. Have you asked a vet?

  2. Most pets do get vaccinations when they’re young. All vets vaccinate for rabies in Canada. Pretty sure that should be standard in the USA too. Just find a vet, make an appointment and request it.

  3. I have done this. My local (not Tokyo) vets knew exactly what to do, and “no rabies in Japan” was no impediment. Where are you located that you are finding it difficult?

Please do your research so that things go smoothly for your cat’s departure. Aside from the rabies shots, here are many tedious rules you have to follow to get things right. You need to start the process at least 4 months before your planned departure.

Email [aqs.nrtr1@maff.go.jp](mailto:aqs.nrtr1@maff.go.jp) if you have questions about the process. Perhaps they can help you to find a vet who has experience preparing (or is willing to learn how to prepare) pet export paperwork.
