I can’t speak for the mobile app as I’ve never used it, but I learnt using the second edition in 2020 and, having skimmed through the third edition since, I would definitely recommend the third edition.
The second edition was released over 10 years ago and everyday vocab has become more “katakanaised” since then (heaps more English loanwords), so to speak, which the third edition takes into account.
