If you were leaving Japan, what would you buy before you leave?

Any advice is welcome 🤗

  1. I’m leaving soon and have been buying things like ceramic wares (sake sets, tea cups, plates, etc.) that I can’t get abroad. Also got a tanuki statue for the garden, just for fun. I’m moving to Europe so I got a quality rice cooker that works on int’l electric systems as well.

  2. On a trip to Kyoto before leaving, I bought a couple of lovely paintings (very Japanese-esque nature scenes, one spring and one autumn). They were quite expensive for me at the time, but I wanted the solid, tasteful memory.

(Little did I know that I would eventually return to Japan and buy a house walking distance from where I bought them. Oh, and now that I think about it, it’s long past due to swap out fall for spring on my wall)

  3. nothing. most of my “moveble” stuff I buy from China or USA. And the stuff I buy in Japan mostly made in China… so…

  4. Thankfully we’re not moving anytime soon, but my main priority is bringing items thatll make our first week back in the states tolerable. Toiletries to food (i know we’ll be in a hotel for a bit).

For our main shipment, we’re planning on buying some japanese plates and knives, action figures, a few Japanese blankets, we’re also looking into purchasing some furnitures (ie kotatsu and whatnots)

  5. Chopsticks, lunch goods like cute thermo bags and bento boxes, handkerchiefs, lacquer boxes, sake cups, anything anime related that’s hard to find outside of Japan like Crayon Shin Chan stuff (he was one of my favorite cartoons growing up).

  6. Bath salts, a trip to a Super Sento, and dinner at Kura-Zushi.

Oh, and all the konbini food I am gonna miss. Particularly Cheeza, Lemon Sours, spicy chicken, and cheese tarts. Fuck me would I miss Cheeza.

  7. Get a Skype phone number. Will be helpful if you need a Japanese number in the future.
