Job Hunt (Tokyo)

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if someone who maybe runs a cafe, bakery or restaurant in Tokyo needs someone to help out in the back of house duties? I’m here on a spousal visa and kinda on my last legs financially speaking. I have extensively worked in hospitality on cruise ships and have a wealth of experience in the customer service field. However, my current Japanese language skills are limited, rudimentary at best, I cannot transcend that experience into the hospitality jobs available locally right now.

I have other skills and qualifications, but it’s been brutal trying to get a job locally for that field. I don’t have the mandatory required university education and no relatable work experience other than certifications I obtained self studying and job application rejections have been high. I have no chance to get remote jobs from home, because my lowly populated country didn’t really have much of an impact from the pandemic. So,  jobs back home are mostly in the office.

I know there’s an influx of tourists right now, so I am hoping maybe someone here needs additional help or knows someone who might be looking? I’ll take any pay.

Thank you in advance to those who might point me in the right direction.

  1. Call every restaurants where you may fit, like Irish or whatever.

Be prepared for long hours, having to work late in the evening, poor pay and unhealthy drinking culture.

  2. Maybe try delivering for Uber eats? That way you are not tied to working long hours and still be able to interact with customers to a degree.

  3. Try any international hotel they are dieing for people and looking for international cooks that can help to communicate with the influx of foreign customers. You would probably be on breakfast service if you don’t have much japanese skills to start.

  4. There are a fair few foreigners working in factories near me. Many seem to have very little Japanese. Mostly SE Asian or S American. Pay seems to be good too. No idea where those jobs are listed, but Google factory work, assembly work or similar.

  5. Tokyo American Club hires a lot of only English speakers. And you can write so you are not illiterate…or was that GPT that hopes to become a line cook?
