kanji alone are not words. Now, that being said, if you just want the kanji (for something like a tattoo, etc), I guess you could use it alone. But do keep in mind kanji can have many interpretations. In this particular case, 痛 can be interpreted as any of the following: pain, hurt, damage, bruise…not just “pain”, so you’d be safer using a word that means specifically “pain”
