Budget of transferring to uni in Japan?

Hey guys,

I’m considering transferring to a uni in Japan to complete my last 2 years in an English taught program, as I’m not really happy with the institution I’m at now. I have good grades and would be looking to do something interdisciplinary like one of the global studies programs or something in the social sciences or humanities. My major is international affairs right now but I have undergraduate coursework in the humanities and social sciences.

My question is, what would the realistic budget be for doing my last 2 years in Japan? Are there universities with programs I am interested in with tuition fees of under 700k yen? I’ve done a lot of research on schools like Sophia and International Christian which have a lot of English taught options, but tuition is around 1 million yen plus living experiences which they seem to estimate at 150k yen a month. Is that a good estimate for living expenses or is it high?

I’ve also read a little about the MEXT program, what are the chances of getting funding from that? I’ve always been fascinated by Japanese culture and would definitely be super interested in going to school there, but it would ideally have to be on less than 1.5 million yen a year with tuition and everything. Is this possible?

Also, does anyone have any experience with options after graduation in terms of either working in japan or my degree transferring back to the States? Or continuing into grad school?

I know I’m asking for a lot of specific info but if anyone has any advice or can steer in the right direction I would be much appreciated
