Nigiri and prices typical of a kaiten restaurant – “Musashi” in Kyoto, Japan

  1. Continuing from [my other post](https://reddit.com/r/sushi/comments/11l557v/grabandgo_box_nigiri_options_in_tokyo_6_pieces/), the last time I was over in Japan I wanted more everyday life experiences and stopped in at some casual restaurants.

“Kaiten” or revolving/conveyer belt sushi – it’s not the best stuff you can find in Japan, but the price point and convenience are hard to beat.

If you’re not familiar with this style of restaurant, you have a conveyer belt of options that go by you and you just grab whatever you like. Cost per item is denoted by the color of the plate it’s on, and staff tally that all up at the end.

I looked up and included some example prices under the first four photos. Red plate items include tuna, madai, hamachi, kanpachi, aji, ika, tako, and shime-saba… *at $1.71 per 2-piece plate* (at today’s exchange rate).

There are fewer blue plate options – salmon belly, shima-aji, unagi – at $2.66 per plate. Gold plate includes types of toro at $3.38 per plate. Then there’s a checker pattern plate with toro hosomaki at $4.63. I believe they also used that for special, made-to-order stuff like uni.

You can see in the photos that each piece is a bit light on fish and heavier on the rice. Still, it definitely ain’t bad for the price!

  2. 馬刺し Basashi- yeah, I’ve had horse many-a-time and it’s surprisingly good. Fuck that mayo shit though. I am so pumped we are going back to Tokyo/Kyoto in like 3 weeks!!! Gatten Sushi was our favorite kaiten when we lived there. Like OP said, not the best but usually better than what we get in the states and one million times cheaper.

  3. Japanese with 2 nigiri per serving and better prices and cuts, versus American Kura with bad cuts and prices and often 1 piece on anything premium.

    Kyoto Now! Indeed.

  4. Damn. I work at a sushi place and that price for chutoro was so cheap. Wish I could eat out over there some day but def skipping the horse meat lol.
