What is your favorite Northern Kyushu seafood market, yatai stall, or ramen stadium?

Today’s question is: What is your favorite eating out spot in Northern Kyushu?

Whether you go to eat *fugu* at the source, Ichiran at it’s place of origin or just like casualness of Fukuoka’s *yatai* stalls – there is something delightful for everyone in Northern Kyushu.

Whether it’s in Fukuoka or Kitakyushu, Nagasaki, or Kurume, or perhaps in Beppu – tell us about your favorite eating out spot in Northern Kyushu.

  1. While technically not in Kyushu, I’ve visited the Karato Ichiba Market in Shimonoseki some years ago and it was a BLAST, certainly one of my most memorable places visited in Japan. The sushi, sashimi and fresh seafood (fried or grilled) are quite affordable plus there are small plates pre-sliced *fugu* for like 600 yen each. You can buy seafood from various stalls and beer from vending machines inside the market. Go upstairs where there are tables overlooking the bustle of the market or even better, tables found outside the market overlooking the pier. The best way to have that “wet market experience” in Japan. Outside the market isn’t bad either. You can buy some ice cream in the pier overlooking the bridge, the Kanmon Strait and Moji across in Kyushu.

  2. I recommend trying a winter Fukuoka specialty, mizutaki, or chicken hot pot. You can try it at Mizutaki Nagano (¥1500) and have an incredible experience. The broth was deeply savory with hints of citrus. They aren’t accustomed to foreigners but were friendly and open. I’ve already saved and starred the restaurant for the next time I’m in Fukuoka. The closest station is Nakasukawabata.
