Working freelance on Upwork in Japan

Hi, all. I did some digging, but couldn’t find anything that answered my questions.

I used to work on Upwork a lot many years ago. Now I am thinking about getting back into it. I have completed all of the criteria on the website and added all of my info, tax info, ID info, etc. I even got one super minor job (40 bucks) but haven’t withdrawn it yet.

Now I don’t want to do anything illegal. But I’m not sure how to move forward. I will be renewing my visa soon, which is “教授”. So to work freelance for Upwork what kind of a permit do I need? I don’t think I can get any sponsorship from the website, and it’s going to be more like a side gig with very inconsistent income.

On a side note, I am doing this just to save some money, so I’m planning to eventually wire the money to my bank account back at home, because my card has expired and I currently don’t have access to it, meaning I won’t be able to spend the money. How does this effect my taxes here in Japan? What would be the procedure for filing the taxes?

Anyway, I just want to figure out how to do this. Any advice would be appreciated!

  1. depends if the work is inside the conditions of your visa you’re fine. you’re correct though that you’ll need a “real” employer to sponsor your visa.
