Agricultural Veterinary Medicine and Research

Hello,

I am a pre-veterinary university junior from USA. I am doing a masters in animal science concentrating in meat science. After this, I plan on veterinary school.

I am interested in large (cow, lamb, etc) animal medicine, meat science, research insemination/embryology, and exporting/importing beef. Does anyone know how realistic it may be to be able to find work? I by no means want to stay in Japan forever, but would love to take that step in my career.

  1. If you want to be a vet in Japan you would first need to complete vet school and have paperwork with the curriculum you took in vet school. You would probably also need JLPT N1 certification. After that is all completed the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries would have to decide if you are qualified to sit for the vet license exam (which is only in Japanese). Realistically if you want to work as a vet in Japan it’ll be near impossible. However, you might be able to find work in research if you get your Japanese to near fluency.

  2. Consider exploring veterinary programs at different Japanese universities and joining one of them as researcher/student. This might give you entry into that domain in Japan.

Without Japanese language fluency, you best bet might be to be a researcher or find work with a large company through contacts and network you build while at university.

Edit: Check Hokkaido University and Obihiro Agricultural University.
