Foreigners driving in Japan

Dearest,

Could you enlighten me as to how I could legally drive in Japan being Brazilian?

I asked the embassy but still no answer.

Thanks 🫶

  1. Since Brazil license cannot be converted to Japanese one and since they don’t issue correct IDPs (under 1949 Geneva convention) either, you’ll need to get a proper Japanese driving license by studying, practicing, attending school (optional) and taking a test (and failing a few times).

  2. If you are a student or still have a month off then try gashuku. It’s like a week or two long licence camp

  3. Do you already know how to drive? You can take the test directly. Just be ultra safe and double check everything during it and it is possible to pass in one or two tries.

You need to know basic Japanese as instructions will be given in Japanese.

  4. You need to convert.
The process is shortened, but you do the written and practical test.
(the test can be applied in Portuguese)
There are several Brazilian dispatchers that offer both the CNH translation service (which starts the whole process) as well as theoretical classes for the test and practical classes for the practical exam – which ends up being the biggest challenge, it is much easier than the Brazilian practical exam but it’s full of details and depending on the evaluator’s mood, you might fail for something trivial.

  5. A CNH do Brasil não pode ser usada aqui. O único jeito é tirar uma habilitação japonesa. O lado bom é que tendo a CNH brasileira, você só faz a prova prática.
