What do you wear on your feet at home?

Slippers are a nightmare for me.

They’re loose and floppy, they constantly slide off my feet, and it’s so annoying to have to keep changing them when I want to use the WC. So I just pad around my home in thick socks in winter, and (gasp!) bare feet in summer.

One of my students broke her nose when she slipped and fell wearing her *own* slippers on the stairs of her own home.

Another student was so exhausted at work one day that she forgot to change back from toilet slippers when she returned to her desk. It took her a long time to live it down.

Not to mention the questionable hygiene of using slippers that have been used by dozens, if not hundreds, of other people in certain public facilities. How often do they get cleaned?

Slippers: yay or nay?

  1. Whatever you want to do in your own home is fine. Outside, abide by the unwritten slipper laws.

  2. Bare feet
Anything else would get the floor too dirty and require me having to mop too much

Socks if it’s absolutely unbearable in winter

  3. I wear slippers from Muji, they wrap around my feet like socks so they don’t flop around and are nice and warm. Doesn’t solve the WC problem, but it solves the floppy problem for sure.

Also bare feet or just socks depending on the weather.

  4. I’ve been swearing by the same indoor shoeware since 20+ years ago, we call them ‘spanish slippers’ (Spaanse sloffen/sloefen). They are suede on the outside, wool on the inside. I wear them all year, hot/cold weather. They’re warm in winter and catch your sweat in summer. Not sure about the availability in Japan, I always back them on my trip back.

I really don’t like the traditional slippers to wear at my own home.

  5. Nothing. If know I can easily avoid any sort of athlete’s foot by skipping out on socks or crocs, I’ll do it.

In my birth country I could wear socks, and still feel cool and dignified. In Japan, the humidity is very high, and will likely lead to a rash or two.

Here, socks and slippers lead to either infection, or injury.

    Barefoot gives you more traction.

  6. Am I a minority here? Walking barefoot especially on wooded floors feels Soo good unless its super cold to walk on

  7. Slippers or flip flops, depending on the temperature.

You also don’t need WC slippers in your own home unless you’re not cleaning it regularly. The public ones are to account for people making a mess of the floors. Understandable if you wanna do it for the sake of habit and guests though.

  8. As others have said, barefoot or socks.
Slippers at home are an accident waiting to happen for me.

  9. Slippers. I just find slippers that fit properly so they don’t slip off. It’s a bit of a chore because my size is not always available, but I manage.

  10. I have three pairs of slippers that I rotate depending on the situation: (1) a new-ish, warm pair that I only wear with clean new socks, (2) an old, beaten-up pair that I wear if I’ve just gotten home from moving around outside and my feet have been sweating, and (3) a felt-bottomed pair that make zero noise when walking, which I wear if the Mrs. is sleeping.

In all cases I insert my feet properly so as to avoid that crushed-back thing that is so popular here.

  11. Fluffy slippers in winter, cotton open-toe slippers or sometimes slides in summer.

My living room is covered with fluffy rugs though, so I do spend a lot of time barefoot

  12. Bare foot, socks, thick socks, light fleece lined slip on shoe with proper back if I’m really cold. Flip flop types are too dangerous on my stairs. We have no wc slippers.

  13. I love wearing my felt Birkenstocks at home year round. Great with thick socks or thin. Moisture is never a problem. Wife has a pair for herself.
No toilet slippers, because we don’t let the toilet room get filthy (and because I sit down to pee and we don’t have an older piss fountain at home).

Some smaller businesses I know of change out their slippers several times a year.

  14. My cats. They’re always attacking my feet, especially when I’m making coffee in the morning. It’s painful but cute.
