[QUESTION] If I quit my full-time job with a valid visa, can I do a a part-time job until I get a permanent one?

For context, I recently started a new job and am still on probation. However, I don’t feel comfortable in this job. Honestly, I realized that I would instead do something similar to what I was doing before this (marketing).

I still have a valid 5-year visa under Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services which will end in 2026. If I were to quit my current permanent job and do part-time similar marketing work (think more office/freelance work with translation etc. Not Seven eleven/restaurant part-time), is it possible? I currently have some savings and if I could do part-time, it would last me a while.

From what I researched, if I work part-time for jobs that is still under this visa type, I don’t need to get permission. However, if I quit my main permanent job, do I then need to get special permission from immigration? And, does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks in advance 🙂

  1. You talked about your permanent job, but it’s definitely not relevant whether the job is permanent. Is the distinction you’re trying to make between a full-time versus a part-time job?

  2. I did this with the same visa as yours. Worked multiple part time teaching gigs for a year until I landed my current job. Actually made more money part time than I did originally but you’ll have to cover insurance, tax and pension on your own.

  3. As long as you’re making enough money to support yourself and within your visa category you’re fine. I work part time eikaiwa jobs and they don’t care. I’m on a 3 year visa and renewed it last year. Other people do part time teaching and then do other things like translation. Only other foreigners look down on shit like that. Immigration doesn’t.

Edit: I should point out that you *do* need to work. You’re on a work visa. You can’t do nothing. Just wanted to make that clear. If you’re not working, then immigration *will* care.
