Quitting my job, losing rental apartment. Need your advice.

The employer who is my guarantor signed a contract with UR prior to me arriving to Japan. The company pays the rent and subtracts it from my salary. Since I am quitting the company (technically already stopped working), the employer wants to terminate the rental apartment contract. They are told by UR that it is possible to change the contract from legal entity to individual, me, only If I have a new job with a salary starting from 24man per month (need to provide proper documents to prove that). I am job hunting and unable to get a new job right this very moment.

I asked the company if it’s possible for them to keep renting the apartment and for me to pay them back, but they say it is impossible. The employer is afraid of potential issues with the law and having no excuse for the tax accountant, etc for still paying the rent for somebody who is no longer employed.

Basically they want to terminate it today or tomorrow and I will be forced to move out on March 31st because UR says they have to be warned at least 2 weeks in advance.

Is there anything I can do to stay in this apartment longer?

I apologize if it was widely discussed before. I read Reddit threads on related issues, but failed to find the exact same situation.

Thank you in advance.

  1. Is the *contract* in your name or in the name of the company? If it’s not in your name, I don’t see anything you can do. If it is in your name (and it’s not a fixed-term contract), I don’t see how they can kick you out… you just have to make arrangements to pay the rent directly.
