My student visa’s expiration date is much later than my duration of stay? I’m confused

Hi, I’m moving to Japan in a few weeks for a 2 year graduate school program and just got my student visa today.

My visa says the date of expiration is in 2028, but the “For Stay Of” says 2 years and 3 months.

Shouldn’t the date of expiration be in 2025? Why is it in 2028? Can I legally stay in Japan until 2028?

Just a little confused by this. Thanks!

  1. The visa is valid as long as you are a full-time student. There is usually a credit threshold to be considered a full-time student, but you’ll likely be fulfilling that anyways. My visa was also much longer than my intended stay, so no worries.

  2. You must enter Japan before the expiration date of the visa page in your passport.

Your period of stay begins from when you enter Japan with that visa.

The date on your zairyu card then says when you must then either leave, or renew your status of residence by.

If it’s a single entry visa, it can only be used once, and becomes irrelevant after you enter with it.
