Job ending soon; how strict are the 90 days for finding a job?

Hello, I googled and searched the group before posting this but a lot of the posts were about changing visas. I’ll try to keep this as short as I can.

On an instructor visa good until 2027. Job contract ends March 31, 2023. I have a job lined up in Thailand beginning at the end of July so I will be leaving Japan. I was going to go home, but my family doesn’t really have anywhere for me to stay and subletting/renting is crazy expensive, especially short-term (Ontario, Canada), so I am thinking of staying here. I’ve had a few interviews with some part-time kids’ English places, and they told me that I might need special permission to work with them on an instructor visa since technically they employ people with humanities visas. No problem for me if it is doable; just looking for part-time work so I can explore Japan on the off days and enjoy the remaining months with friends.

But what happens if I end up not employed? Given that I finish my job on March 31, I technically need to leave Japan by July 1, right? I was thinking of going to Thailand in the first week of July, but wondering how strict I need to be about the exact date. I’m fine with going to Thailand on July 1 if need be; it’s just that my company is asking me to book my flight soon (they reimburse) and I’m on the fence. If I left on July 5 or 6 instead, would I be busted since technically it’s longer than 90 days? I don’t want to flout the rules. Thanks!

  1. It’s supposed to be 90 days, but in reality they don’t really seem to notice and/or care. I’ve known people here that were literally doing nothing for like a year until they got a new job.

I burnt out at one point due to too much overwork and ended up at home for about half a year without any income myself and nobody even asked me any questions when it came to renewing my visa. I’m in Osaka though, so maybe that has something to do with it.

Especially if it’s only a couple of days in your case, no need to worry.

  2. I’d avoid breaking the rules. Depending on your living situation during that time you could do a weekend in Korea and come back to Japan on a tourist visa, or just stay in Korea for a week between Japan and Thailand?
