Sorry for not referring to the wiki for this, but I was wondering if the wiki is really helpful for what I need. I currently want to focus on being able to read and understand, even speak japanese. I don’t plan to get into writing anytime soon. But the resources I’ve seen listed on the wiki seem to be more aimed at people who also want to learn to write.
Can you give me any tips on how to go about learning the language as any other guy, except for the writing part

Just ignore anything mentioned in the sources related to writing?
Japanese is very reliant on the written form. You’re going to have to get used to the writing. Roseta stone fails to realize this and the Japanese version of it is almost useless
I’ve seen people who have been able to skip the writing part but they’ve lived in Japan for 20+ years and can only use very basic Japanese but at a decent speed. It’s simply not a language like English or Spanish where you can get away with not reading. Even Chinese is much more similar grammar wise than Japanese is
Favorite quote from new comers to Japan: “I don’t need to learn kanji. I don’t care about reading. I only want to speak”
These people don’t last very long
