“wow factor” for college application (Japanese universities)

Hi there i’m in my junior year of high school, and been considering going to a Japanese Uni. Been studying Japanese for around a year. As I have seen around other subs, Japanese universities do not prioritize extracurriculars that much compared to US universities, is that true? i have received some certificates for academic competitions, will that make an effect on my application? Basically from the researching that I have gathered, japanese universities usually look at exam scores, essays and gpa (mainly), and I would like to confirm if what I said was true? Do you guys recommend anything that prospective students can do to boost their application or examples of “wow factors” that can be attained as a high school junior? Thank you so much!
