A close relative of my partner went missing a few months ago. He’s Japanese and we have reason to believe he may have been arrested for theft and ultimately jailed. The police don’t seem interested in providing details, but I was wondering if there are court records open to the public here? And where I might be able to search for an individual case?

The only way you can find someone’s trial info is to go to the specific court the person is being trialed at on that specific day. They put up a piece of paper on which information like whose trials are scheduled at what time on that day are written. So I’d say it’s pretty much impossible to find specific trial info in Japan unless it’s a big or famous case.. I could be wrong but I’ve had a trial myself last year and that’s what it seemed like.
