Itinerary – Help us plan our route through the Japanese Alps and maybe Beppu?!

Hi! It is our first time visiting Japan and we will be visiting in mid-to-late May for 17 days and I have QUESTIONS! We love adventure and the outdoors, so while we are excited to visit the big cities and see the sights.. we are most excited about experiencing Japan’s outdoor wonders!

Questions:

1. Between days 5-10 is where I need the most help: I am trying to figure out what is the best route order between these places. We were also potentially interested in visiting Matsumoto but couldn’t figure out where it would best fit in the route. We love outdoor adventures, so open to any suggestions if we are missing something cool! (Note: we were planning on doing the 14 day JR Pass and starting it on day 5)
2. Should we flip day 9 and 10? My initial thought was it would be too intense of a travel day to go from Kamikochi all the way to Kyoto in one day but if we switched day 9/10 then we would be able to stay at the same place for days 8/9 in Takayama
3. My husband saw a video of Beppu and the volcano area and is really interested in going… but I am not sure if it is truly possible (edit: enjoyable without being super rushed) to squeeze it in. We would be open to cutting a day from Kanazawa and Kyoto and maybe a day from Osaka giving us 3 days there.. curious if you think it would be worth the trek down there and if so where would you put it in the itinerary and what suggestions do you have for this area?
4. Any ryokan recommendations for the best Mt. Fuji views (we are very sad we won’t be able to hike it). I’d like to stay under $300 ish USD.

Here is our \~rough\~ itinerary:

1. Tokyo – arrive at Haneda @ 2pm, explore Shinjuku area, check into hotel, Tokyo skytree for city views at sunset
2. Tokyo – Disney Sea
3. Tokyo – explore Harajuku, Ginza, vintage shop in Shimokitazawa (tell me stores!)
4. Tokyo – day trip, maybe Nikko?
5. Train to Nagono to Tateyama Alpine Route to Kanazawa
6. Kanazawa – Kentoku-en, Higashi Chaya
7. Kanazawa – Ninja temple, Omicho Market, open to suggestions
8. to Shirakawa-go to Takayama – explore Shirakawa-go for a bit and end the day in Takayama (unless staying in Shirakawa-go is really recommended.. also having trouble finding a place to book in general here)
9. to Kamikochi – hike: Kappabashi – Myojin Pond – Kappabashi
and stay in a Ryokan (Probably at Hirayu – would love recommendations)
10. to Takayama – spend day in Kamikochi, visit the ropeway and end in Takayama and stay there
11. to Kyoto – Fushimi Inari Taisha, Nijo castle, Kinkaku-ji, Kiyomizu-dera Temple
12. Kyoto – Nishiki market, bamboo hike
13. Kyoto – Nara day trip
14. to Osaka – Osaka castle, Dontonbori, Shitennoji
15. Osaka – Universal
16. to Hakone/Mt Fuji region (stay at ryokan)
17. To Tokyo – flight home

Thank you in advance 🙂

  1. Yep, day 5-10 definitely is a mess.

    Day 5: go to Kamikochi.

Day 6: maybe more time in Kamikochi, and Matsumoto.

Day 7: Do Alpine Route and go to Takayama in the evening. (Or stay in Toyama if it’s too late)

Day 8: Takayama, to Shirakawago, to Kanazawa.

    Day 9-10: Kanazawa.

This will have very little backtracking, compared to your itinerary
