そんな事言われても implied meaning

I see this phrase a lot in anime, i know it roughly translates to “even if you say that…” but what is the hidden meaning behind this phrase? I guess it would be something like “even if you say that, there is nothing i can’t do”.

  1. Yeah, I read it as something like “yes, that can be said to be true…” or more succinctly, “you could say that”, or “that could be said”, with the implication being “but, that actually isn’t the case here”

  2. I think そんなこと言われても is often followed by the phrase like these :

    そんなこと言われても、どうしたらいいのか分からないよ (or どうすりゃいいんだよ)
    I don’t know what to do even if you say that

    そんなこと言われても、どうしようもないよ
    I can’t do anything even if you say such things

  3. * it’s not my job to handle the matter
    * nothing can be done about that
    * stop complaining
    * tell that to whoever is responsible for the mess
    * I don’t have the authority to make changes to make you feel better
    * do you expect the world to change just to accommodate you?

  4. It depends on the context, but I often interpret in a similar way to how someone in English would say. ” yeah but…..”.
    or sometimes “That’s easier said than done” or “that’s easy for you to say…”

  5. I often opt for “Even so” or “Regardless” when I’m translating this. Japanese is not an information dense language, so speakers can flap their way through a heck of a lot of mora without really saying much of substance. Don’t be afraid to chop it down to something that sounds more natural in English or whatever language you’re translating to.

  6. I remember そんな事俺たちに言われても was translated as “That’s easy for you to say, but we…” in Demon Slayer which aligns with what other commenters have said, which is that it’s kind of a grumble of “Yeah you say that **but**…” followed by some sort of excuse or saying there’s nothing that can be done about the situation
