I was just informed of this trip a few days ago. Every day I am going to spend at least an hour studying Japanese using Duolingo, the Genki books, a Kanji dictionary, and YouTube channels, among a few other things. Earlier today I didn’t really know any Japanese but I have already learned most of the hiragana. I will get back with you guys as soon as the trip is over and see how much I was actually able to do with my limited knowledge of Japanese. I know I won’t be fluent in the slightest, but I believe that this will be an interesting experiment that many people here will appreciate hearing about

Get as good as you can in reading katakana, that’s gonna be your most important skill probably
Katakana and a tourist phrase book would be the most practical in that timeframe.
Katakana
Counting words
Basic shopping transaction words
Basic conversation
If all else fails, use google translate’s camera mode and slow English to communicate.
I honestly don’t understand duolingo’s popularity
I am on the same boat my friend, learning japanese for my visit of Japan in august. Perhaps I will already try JLPT N5/N4 by the end of the year✌🏼
