Is deconstructing sentences a good way of learning sentence structure?

Hello, this is my first time using reddit however I really want an answer to my question. At first I began my quest of translating song lyrics in hopes of expanding my vocabulary, that however, does not work when I can’t understand the sentence itself. So, I took on a different approach, Ill open up a drawing app, copy and paste the sentence, then underline each part of the sentence and how its functioning (ex. If theres a noun ill underline it with the translation at the bottom and noun at the top) does this actually help me with anything, or am I just wasting my time? I’m not very sure, I do all the standard stuff (textbooks, flashcards) but I wanted to branch out and try practicing in different ways, all help is appreciated!!

(I know basic sentence structure but interactive with native content makes my brain explode)

  1. I did basically the same thing to start with. I’d write out the sentence and then re-write it several times, translating it more and more along the way until it made sense, almost like how you simplify algebraic expressions or something like that. Yes it does work a lot at the beginning but eventually becomes unnecessary

  2. I’d do it only for a few sentences, from time to time. I don’t think it’s beneficial to do it with every sentence. It’s ok for the input to be noisy at the beginning, otherwise you spend so much time on a single sentence. It’s understandable you feel like you’re wasting time because you actually are, in my opinion. Try to do it occasionally and only when a sentence is really interesting to you, for most sentences just read them normally without translating, I think you’d progress faster in this way.
