Writing Japanese

I’m just starting to learn Japanese. My goals for learning this language is to ultimately pass the JLPT exams at least JLPT 3.
Right now I’m learning hiragana and katakana together.

I was wondering though how perfect does my writing need to be? A lot of the curves of my characters are more like straight lines. And on certain characters like い and オ my lines aren’t curves and more like straight lines and slightly off in position. Is that a problem?

  1. A few words in and I can already tell you’re applying English phrasings and grammar. For better or for worse you don’t need to “do” Japanese yourself for the test as neither writing nor speaking are covered.

  2. I’ve found that stroke order and the type of pen/pencil I use helps. I like .7mm mechanical pencil with soft lead, or .7mm gel pens. If you have a tablet with a stylus you can also try downloading some kana/kanji templates and practice there.

Ultimately thought everyone has their own handwriting. If you look at native handwriting it’s not all uniform like you’re thinking. Some people write sharp and short, some people write loose and curvy. It depends. I personally wouldn’t worry about having perfect penmanship tbh.
