Softbank Hikkari Wi-Fi

Hey, guys! I’m moving to my new apartment here in Oita prefecture, and I’ve got the Softbank Hikari as wifi. They are providing the unit, but we’ll have to buy the router separately. It’s a 2LDK apartment, and I’ll be moving there with my roommate. It would be great if any of you could suggest good routers for the WI-FI

  1. Please see the wiki: https://www.reddit.com/r/japanlife/wiki/internet There’s a list of all the domestic makers and routers. My personal recommendation if you don’t have any specific requirements is the following: https://kakaku.com/item/K0001359587/ It supports wifi6, all IPoE services, and is cheap enough with decent performance.

However, as you’re on softbank, you need their bbunit rental to make use of [ipv6 and faster connection](https://www.softbank.jp/internet/hikari/ipv6/). since it’s 500/mo fee which you can’t avoid as long as you’re on softbank, you might as well just use bbunit’s WiFi for “free”. or you can get the router i recommended and run it in AP mode behind the bbunit just as a wifi extender/access point.

  2. SoftBank Hikari Wi-Fi user here. If you don’t care about getting the absolute fastest connection possible, just go to your closest Bic Camera, tell the staff you’re looking for a Wi-Fi router (you can mention you’re using SoftBank Hikari), and buy the cheapest one they recommend (usually ~¥4000). My most intensive internet use is for Zoom video calls and haven’t had any issues so far.
