9 Day city itinerary- Tokyo/Kyoto

Hello, just wondered if anyone might be able to help or comment on our upcoming trip. We are mid 40s, seasoned travellers but never been to Japan before. Looking to take a deep dive into the city at the expense of seeing the rest of the country in too short a time.

This is a big trip for us, so we are ok with letting the budget run a little wild. We are happy to miss out on sleep to get the early mornings and late nights!

We’ve put a lot of thought into the things we want to see and do (mix of big ticket cultural sites and just soaking up the atmosphere in a neighborhood hanging out at local bars and cafes) but would hate to waste too much time on travel if we’ve missed something obvious or equally miss out on something beautiful, quirky or fun because we didn’t ask the question!

Basic itinerary below. Big questions are- how to make the most of the day trip to the Fuji area and how best to make a very limited stay in Kyoto work. We are staying in incredible hotels in Tokyo so would appreciate any family stay/quirky suggestions for a night in Kyoto.

Thanks very much in advance for any suggestions.

  1. I am not sure if your plans for Kyoto are feasible. Plot everything on a map and then figure out distances and transportation. You may want to add another day in Kyoto, if you want to do it all.

  2. I have been two Japan twice now (just came back from #2) and you absolutely need more time in Kyoto.
Bare minimum would be 2 full days, you are underestimating travel time, walking, etc.
Take a look at google maps so you have an idea how Kyoto is separated. Fushimi Inari is bottom right corner by itself, bamboo forest is top right corner for example.
