Join Rakuten as SRE?

Hi all, sorry for the post, but I just wanted to talk with some unbiased people before making a decision. I’m 28 and I was offered a job in Rakuten as an SRE. The salary is normal (8mil gross), the team promising (female manager) but required to be on-call 1 week every 30 days.

I like Japan but I don’t have the urge to move there. When they’ll reopen to tourists, I could easily set up a 3-month trip and probably see more then, than just while working for Rakuten. Anyhow, the idea to work in Japan just thrills me and got me so excited.

Would you advise me to join them or refuse?

Notes: I currently have a job that I like, where I’m not on-call, I work max 5h/day, I’m remote and can travel from anywhere in Europe (that’s the plan if I turn down Rakuten). I like to travel and visit places, probably the most important thing to me, right now. I’m at an N4 level. I have to decide by end of April. I’m scared of the working hours/few paid leaves.

  1. can I ask how did it happened ? did you applied for this job or your company introduced rakuten to you ?

  2. I’m currently at a job where I’m on call on a similar schedule. I love my team, have easy working hours etc but this is probably the upper limit of how much % of time I’m willing to be on call (we’re actually taking drastic steps to expand the rotation after lots of feedback). So I’d just be wary of that piece.

And it matters especially for me as I’m transferring to our Japanese office, each week I’m on call it makes it harder to commit to social activities (especially involving drinking) / traveling etc.
