Hey all,
I am ecstatic that I moved on to the interview stage of the process and I want to complete any paperwork/necessary docs as soon as possible just in case. On the release form, it says we need a passport-style photo. Obviously, I don’t intend on wearing anything unprofessional like a hoodie or nightwear, but do I need to wear a suit for this photo? Or is the photo more for facial identification purposes? Any tips for taking the photo and what you wore would be appreciated! 🙂

I took a pic from my cell with a “professional shirt”, I think you will be fine. Best of lucks to you! I hope you get to experience Japan!
In Japan, it is considered the norm to take a passport-style photo in a business suit for anything that relates to work as professionalism is a huge thing when it comes to job applications. Though, I am not saying that you aren’t allowed to wear something else other than a suit for the photo-taking, it’s just unconventional and you wouldn’t want it to jeopardize your chances.
With that said, congratulations on making it to the interview phase of the application process! Be yourself and show the interviewers your worth.
I pray for the success of your interview.
At this stage it doesn’t really matter too much.
I just took a photo in front of a white wall, in a t-shirt and hoodie. I was accepted.
Don’t overthink it. If there are any issues with your photo, they will contact you.
I live within a large Korean-American community, and there was a local photostore that would do the “professional” style passport photos that Japan likes to use (Korea is also largely the same).
It actually looks really slick. If you have the chance, get yourself in a suit and take one. Well worth it.
The photo will be used, if you are accepted, on your Visa and your Residence Card.
Just has to fit within the normal parameters of a passport style photo. Plain (usually white background) with a front facing view of your head and neck, no hats, glasses, masks, etc.
You can search online for examples.
Attire usually doesn’t matter since little of it is visible anyway.
Casual is fine for the interview-response photo. A plain shirt will do. It’s a little early to dress formally.
