Itinerary Check: 70 Days Solo in Most of Japan

Hi everyone!

For some context, I’m traveling to Japan in mid-May this year for 70 days, doing solo travel. I’m 19M, from Australia and looking to see and do as much as I can in Japan and experience as many things as possible. Posting here to get an overall check on my itinerary and looking to get as much feedback as possible.

I have already booked flights and in total, I have a full 70 days to spend in Japan. If you count it from the time I leave from Australia and then arrive back, it’s 73 days if that’s relevant. Leaving on the 15th of May and arriving back on the 27th of July.

I’m looking to go as budget as possible, but I am anticipating to be spending between AUD $7000-9000 for the entire time there, which I am prepared for.

I’ve gone with Southern Cross Travel Insurance and gotten International Comprehensive travel insurance.

Since I will be spending a majority of my trip travelling around, I will be purchasing a 21-day and 14-day rail pass, because as far as I can see, they are the most cost efficient and practical travel passes.

So far, my packing list is as so: ([Roughly following this list](https://www.veryhungrynomads.com/the-ultimate-packing-list-for-travellers/))

* Osprey Farpoint 40 Backpack
* Power-bank (To buy)
* Good walking shoes (To buy)
* Universal adapter (To buy)
* Day pack (To buy, might go with Osprey again)
* Assortment of clothes
* Various toiletries
* Sunglasses
* Phone/laptop/chargers

At every opportunity, I will be going with the most recommended and cheapest youth hostels in the area. I will also be booking them on booking.com to try and rack up as many loyalty points as possible. Any suggestions on recommended accommodation would be welcomed, since I haven’t selected any specific day for them, just tried to see what would be available in like 2-3 months or so.

I will be using ING as my main international bank, but I will also have Up as a backup bank.

Going to be using Ubigi for my data, not sure what plan to go with at the moment, but I have just ordered a SIM starter pack so that I can use them.

Some other small notes:

I’ve noticed a few times that a top attraction for a place like a remote village or temple is to just stay the night there in a nice farmhouse or temple for example. Although these seem to range anywhere from AUD $100-250 or so, they still seem to be highly recommended.

Hence, I’m wondering if that’s worth incorporating into the trip, because as is, my trips to places like these are just for the day and not for the night, as I would return back to the main city after spending my time in that location?

Referencing this [Temple Lodging](https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e4905.html) and this [Gassho-Zukuri Farmhouse](https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e5952.html).

Also, I’ve heard that bookings for [Ghibli Museum](https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3041.html) sell out incredibly fast. I’d be in Tokyo for the last leg of my trip in July likely, but apparently they sell three months in advance. In that case, does that mean I should be eyeing them out in May to try and get one?

At the moment, my itinerary includes locations in order of visiting them, relevant accommodation links and lists of things I could see for the day. I’ve mostly used links from japan-guide and their recommendations, because they have such an organised and comprehensive website.

The days aren’t perfectly matching the 70 day duration, because I’m predicting I will need to do a lot of adjusting for unforeseen changes or errors in my itinerary. For every day, I have tried to pick out at least three activities/things to see or do, however please do let me know if either I should see something else instead for that day, or if there’s too many things on that day, let me know which ones I should prioritise instead.

For clarification, I’ve labelled places/activities as a “day trip” when they involve significantly going out of my way of a location and will likely take most of the day to do, but then returning to the city after. For “separate day trips”, they are only for the rail pass when I am basically just passing by the place for the day, then staying somewhere else for the night. Just to reduce any backtracking.

This itinerary is NOT dated yet, because I may still change up elements of it. Just day allocations in order of visiting.

The map diagrams on japan-guide details that with this route, I can go from Toyama, all the way to Matsumoto, which would align with my trip overall. Any help with this the feasibility of this would be appreciated!

  1. Amazing planning, id love to see a budget breakdown, im going away for 36 days and to do everything and accommodation ended up being a minimum 24k.

  2. This is amazing planning!

    I am planning to visit this fall so this is from my own research but please do your own due diligence as I may have gotten things wrong! 😅

    For Studio Ghibli, they release entry tickets for the following month on the 10th of each month. So if you will be there sometime in July, the earliest you can book is June 10.
    https://l-tike.com/st1/ghibli-en/sitetop

    For Kamikochi, if you take the bus from Matsumoto, you can get dropped off at Taisho Pond. Then it’s a 1.5hr walk to Kappabashi Bridge. This section is apparently the most beautiful part. There is a hike from Kappabashi to Tokusawa (which passes Myojin Pond) that takes 2hr one way. It is another 1hr to Yosoo. Many people hike to Tokusawa or Yosoo and then back to Kappabashi for the day. If you want to overnight, you can hike up to Karasawa Hutte… this is where the mountaineers make their push for peaks in the area. It apparently is very steep after Yosoo to Karasawa Hutte.

    Other places I came across my research that are notables in this area are:
    Shin-hotaka Ropeway (we are planning to visit from Hirayu Onsen which is about 55min away from Takayama) and
    Mt Norikura (1.5hr from Matsumoto)

    For Hiroshima, a recommended day trip that I came across is the Sandankyo Gorge that is about 1h20m away. I don’t know if it might be too hot for hiking when you are there but apparently you can jump into its waters. It looks beautiful.

    For the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, I am doing it in the opposite direction and I still have no idea how to buy tickets for it. I dunno if you could buy all legs of it at one time vs buying them separately? Hopefully someone can clarify.

  3. Regarding the art islands part of your itinerary- we spent a full day just doing Naoshima and a full day doing Teshima.

    From what I remember from ferry timetables it would be hard to do more than one in a day depending on how much you want to see on each island.

    I can definitely recommend Teshima though, it was the highlight of our trip!

  4. haha I’m planning a 20 day trip solo and projecting to spend approx 7k. Will be impressed if you manage to budget that tight OP

  5. Amazing guide, I am planning on doing about 90 days myself … this gives me so many good ideas..

    Some tips

    Not sure if you have a good deal on your eSim, but pocket wifi tends to be cheaper per month and more GB, otherwise buying a sim card at the airport/anywhere is also inexpensive

    * Osprey Farpoint 40 Backpack – Greatest bag ever.
    * Power-bank (To buy) – buy a 20k mAh minimum, if you get a portable wifi that also usually comes with a powerbank or can be used as such.
    * Good walking shoes (To buy) – go vivobarefoot if you have them in Australia, you can also buy tax free stuff in japan after your arrival
    * Day pack (To buy, might go with Osprey again) – get a smaller uniqlo one there, that is extremely foldable

  6. If you don’t mind taking the bus I think that would be quite a bit cheaper than rail passes and you can take overnight ones too and save a hostel night. Also they sometimes go to places directly without having to change trains.

    You can go from Toyama through the alpine route to Matsumoto. Ticket price for it is on their website. Make sure to reserve it beforehand, sometimes the early ones are sold out.

    For kamikochi; if you want to do an actual hike you can do yakedake. Easy hike and you get to a peak otherwise you’ll be only in the valley

  7. Just wanted to say that I am very happy that Yakushima is on your list. It is a STUNNING location. I always recommend it to anyone who is in that part of the country. As a tip for the hiking: start early, because there will be A LOT of people at certain points in the trails. And don’t feel bad if you are passed by people well into theirs 80s. 😂😂 You should see if there are any turtle things happening when you are there (they lay eggs on the beaches, but not sure what time of year). Also the island is super small, so if you can rent a vehicle i think that is a nice way to get around.

    I can also highly recommend Universal Studios Japan. 😍

    (Edited to add the last line)

  8. Amazing but you’re missing alot of amazing museums in this. Maybe I missed them. Teamlab, contemporary art museums which are very differentfrom national art museums, music box museum, stained glass museum, pokemon attractions in Tokyo. Just make sure you look up all the cool museums in each city!

  9. Confused about your day trips to Yakushima. Are you saying you’re taking the toppy over every day?

    Are you renting a car? How are you getting around the island, just depending on the bus?

  10. Consider using [Agoda](https://www.agoda.com/) for accommodation booking. They are more often than not cheaper than Booking. I also recommend checking with Google Maps, because it usually compares prices and you can select the cheapest one. I recently saved 20 euros by comparing and ending up booking via trip.com 🙈

  11. Hi! You can’t climb mt Fuji in mid May, only certain weeks July-august. Mt Takao is an amazing day trip from Tokyo with great views and you can actually climb it.

    Also I wouldn’t combine anything else with USJ, spread that day three out!

  12. I have a lot of similarities on my planning. However Yakushima takes a lot of time to get to, through, and around unless you’re trail running.

  13. Just a heads up about Osaka aquarium (or any animal related places in Japan for that matter), the animals are not given enough space to live and the overall environment is a bit appalling. I’m not a animal rights person at all and even then I felt a bit uncomfortable and felt sorry for those fish on display. If you insist on going, try not to go during weekends, there were kids screaming the whole way through the aquarium last time I was there, I couldn’t believe it happened in Japan where everyone is so quiet…

  14. Lol is this your first long backpacking trip or something. Don’t take packing advice from someone who brings an espresso machine and 4 pairs of shoes…

  15. You’re for sure spending a lot of time in many of these places (at least a lot more than I did). I did Bunny Island + Onomichi on a single day as a day trip from Hiroshima. I did Okayama and Kurashiki as a day trip from Kyoto. I also only spent 1 day in Nara as a day trip from Osaka and I combined Himeji and Kobe into a single day as well (also from Osaka). I think I spent 2 or 3 nights each in Nagano and Matsumoto and there wasn’t necessarily that much to do/see in either city. Maybe if we’d have rented a car doing trips out of the city would have been more convenient.

    On the other hand we spent like 4 days in Fukuoka and I felt like that city had quite a bit to do and you only have 1 day there.

  16. Thank you so much for sharing! I’m only going for 28 days and I’m struggling to fit everything in. You have given me some ideas. Thank you 🙂

  17. 😵 my budget is very different I’m heading to japan (solo) also from Australia and im 20 staying for 21 days mid late may – early ish June and current costings hit around 9000 AUD

  18. For Fuji a number of people I hear just go to the 5th Station and climb to the summit there if you know what you’re doing if not can just take a trail going around or part way. [https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e6922.html](https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e6922.html)

    The Imperial Palace is by tour only and people in google reviews said it wasn’t worth it since they just walk you around the grounds looking at buildings as you do not enter any of them. So I skipped it myself.

  19. If you want to crash in my guest room for free near Narita airport, hit me up. It’s much nicer than a hostel.

  20. I highly recommend some more downtime days. Hang with locals. Rest. Recover. Rejuvenate. Too much nonstop action can start to feel like a job instead of an adventure. FWIW, YMMV.

  21. The biggest advice I can give you as someone who spent 90 days traveling solo in Japan is to leave some days where you do absolutely nothing. It’s exhausting traveling and I enjoyed the days where I just stayed in my hostel or hotel the entire day and did nothing. Also, although my situation was slightly different because I owned a car, I was able to do three months for $10,000 USD because I could take advantage of free overnight rest stops a lot of the time instead of having to use hostels.

  22. Just a quick reminder to buy your shoes earlier rather than later, and to break them in before you go. Blisters are the worst!
