14 days itinerary in August

Hi all! I’m travelling to Japan for the first time next august with my girlfriend (both 28) and I’m trying to finish my proposed itinerary. We are both very active so busy travel days do not worry us. The idea is to see as much as possible but let me know if you think there’s too much in a day! Tips and suggestions are more than welcome as I’ve literally just started drafting this yesterday and I’m sure I’ve missed much – especially in Tokyo which is absolutely massive.

2 August: travelling from Rome to Tokyo

3 August: arrival in Tokyo. Not sure yet at what time as I’ve not yet bought the tickets but for the purposes of this I’ve assumed we will arrive in the evening

4 August: Tokyo, meiji jingu Harujuku, Tokyo metropolitan building

5 August: Tokyo, Team labs, Tsujiki, Shibuya

6 August: Tokyo studio ghibli, akihabara, roppongi

7 August: Tokyo, day trip to Hakone or Nikko. Still on the fence about this one but we wanted to see mt Fuji so maybe Hakone is the better option?

8 August: Tokyo, senso ji, Ueno, Tokyo national musuem

9 August: kanazawa, kenroku and suzuki museum. Is there any way here to add ainokura? I guess we would need to add a day right?

10 August: travel to Kyoto, nijo jo and nishiki

11 August: Kyoto, kinkaju ji Ryoan ji tenryu-ji

12 August: Kyoto, kiyomizu dera chion-in ginkaku ji

13 August: travel to Hiroshima, peace museum and park + atomic bomb dome

14 August: Hiroshima – Miyajima

15 August: travel to Osaka, Osaka Castle, dotonbori, amerikamura and possibly abeno harukas for the view?

16 August : Nara day trip from Osaka

17 August: travelling back home from Osaka

What do you think about this? I’m pretty confident with the latter part of the trip but I still got some doubts over the first one ( till kyoto). I guess 4 days in Tokyo are necessary are they not? Because alternatively I might cut a day in Tokyo and either do a second day trip to hakone or nikko or add a day in Kanazawa ( or around there) and see ainokura more comfortably. What do you all reckon? Grazie!

  1. Japan has Obon holidays from Aug 11 to 16 this year, and it will get extremely busy. Book your accommodations and transportation asap.

I assume you already know how hot and humid Japan gets during summer, but I warn you the summer in Kyoto is even hotter than the other major cities because of its geographical location; Kyoto locates in a valley. I lived in Kyoto for three years, and every summer was a torture for me. Hydrate yourselves well, and always carry a long sleeve thin jacket. You will start feeling cold as soon as you get inside because they use air conditioners crazy.
