SoftBank has zero roaming charges in the US?!

My wife is going to the US next week and so to avoid potentially punishing data or roaming charges we checked out Softbank’s website (see link below) and apparently there is zero charge for roaming in the states! According to the website: “Unlimited voice calls and data for any Softbank users, even in the U.S.” for zero extra cost.

Is this too good to be true? Anyone have any experience with this? I’d hate to get a nasty surprise when she returns.

  1. I couldn’t get it to work when I was there in December. Had to update my sim under settings. It could never update.

  2. I visited the US with a softbank phone in December and was not charged anything extra even though I used data roaming and 5g.

  3. Yeah it’s been like this for like over 15 years. America Hodai. That’s one of the reasons I had Softbank. Now you can switch out sims, but in the old days you couldn’t. It’s great.

While you are in the US you can make and receive phone calls from the US or Japan for free. Basically it’s exactly your same plan as you had in Japan, but you happen to be in the US

  4. It works almost everywhere in the US, but not all of the territories. As long as you aren’t in Guam you are good to go!

  5. Before it was merged with T-mobile, Sprint was owned by SoftBank, which is where that deal originated – they owned the network so they could make it free to use
