Being a nail artist in Japan

I’m a nail artist and nail technician from Italy who owns over 6 years of experience in this field.
In my country we don’t need an official qualification to apply this kind of job, but to join a several number of private classes, as I did.

Years ago I decided to start this job because I was really fashinated by japanese nail art and nail techniques, but in Europe we usually study the russian method, which is kinda different from the japanese one.

For my personal work development, I would learn the Japanese techniques studying there for a while.

I searched on the internet but I wasn’t able to find anything related, there’s someone who had this kind of experience?
Is possible for a foreign to apply for a nail job in a japanese saloon or join some classes there?
I’m sure that classes will be in Japanese, my level is absolutely basic (almost none), but since is basically practical work and demostrations I’m sure I could easily learn.

My idea is to go there to study the nail techniques maybe working directly with clients, to expand my knowledge and skills.

If someone can help me, please I would really appreciate it 🙂
Thank you!

  1. You’d need to find someone to give you a job that will sponsor you for a visa. That’s really all there is to it – either that, or get married to a national.

  2. ~~Unfortunately you’d need to go Japanese beauty school in order to get a job in a beauty salon here, that means being able to read and speak Japanese very well~~. If you were to come on a tourist visa you’d probably be able to find some classes for DIY nail art, but unfortunately there’s no tourism right now. Edit: I thought I might have been off about the visa and there’s actually no way one can sponsored even with a degree from trade school

Further edit: it might be interesting to some that Tokyo is working towards being able to bring in 美容師 by this year, according to that website

  3. I know a Nail Artist who has done courses (on a tourist visa) and sat the certification exam (Chinese speaker, but had to learn some Japanese too). So definitely possible, she didn’t have a work visa because she was just doing courses.

  4. You can try reaching out to the Japan Nailist Association (JNA), a NPO. They have an English website so perhaps you can obtain relevant advice from them.

  5. Honestly, there are a lot of Japanese nail artists who post tutorials on YouTube. Since you already know the basics, you can probably pick up different techniques pretty quickly that way.

I don’t see a need for you to be in Japan.
