October itinerary advice, Gifu/ Shizuoka

Hello Japan travellers!

My wife and I are heading Japan in mid/late October for 16 days. This will be our 3rd trip to Japan.

So far all we have booked is 4 days in Tokyo. Our vague plan is to head down to Fujisan by train, then potentially via Nagoya (which we have previously visited but felt it could be a good starting point to head into the Alpine region) then onto Takayama and Matsumoto, finally heading back to Tokyo for a few days at the end. We thought about hiring a car from Nagoya and dropping it off in Tokyo at the end as an alternative to trying to navigate the alps by train. (good or bad idea?)

We are late 30’s/ early 40’s and interested in Arts/crafts, food and walking. My wife speaks/understands some Japanese as she has been learning since our first trip 8 years ago. Not hugely budget conscious ( it’s our rather delayed honeymoon!)

I realise this is all a bit vague but if anybody has any tips for places to visit around Shizuoka/ Gifu etc (or any other tips really) we would appreciate it!
