Dandruff Issue

I have been suffering from extreme dandruff problems ever since I moved here (I live in Kawasaki ku). H&S anti-dandruff helped for a little while but no effect now. Quite a few people I know suffer from the same issue. Going to the doctor is obviously a solution but does anyone know the reason, is it the water? Or something else?

  1. Humidity plays a big role in the summer, Dryness does that in the winter. I had a similar issue and found メディクイックH amazing. Just use it twice or three times a week and youll see the difference. When the dandruff is gone, then drop down to once or twice a week.

  2. Your skin isn’t used to the climate. There are better medical shampoos you can use than H&S to help with dandruff. mediquick etc.

  3. Dandruff is essentially yeast overgrown. Humidity and heat exacerbate the problem. I’d start with low carb diet in addition to medicated shampoo.

  4. Same happens to me, its the humidity in Japan that messed up the skins. Demi biove moist scalp shampoo was recommended by my hair stylist and works pretty great so far.

  5. Firstly, switch out your shower head for one that has a chlorine filter, if you haven’t already.

Secondly, the only thing that consistently works for me is importing the proper Head and Shoulders stuff from home. Little bit expensive, yeah, but the peace of mind is worth it.

  6. Get ketoconazole shampoo (nizoral).

It’s not sold in Japan but you can get it from osakado or from countries where it’s been approved (it’s fda approved and sold over the counter in the US, in European countries it is only sold in pharmacies).

Put it on your scalp, wait 5 minutes and rinse. Do not use it more than twice a week if you want to keep your hair. Ketoconazole has a mild hair growth side effect but if will also cause hair dryness which make them break easily.

I only use it once every 2 weeks and I’m dandruff free, you should see a major reduction after the first use, second use will make you pretty much dandruff free and then it’s just maintenance.

  7. Had terrible dandruff since moving to Japan, changed the showerhead to a filtered one and was magically cured

  8. Nizral shampoo( ketoconazole) is the best.
2percent one is better but even 1percent one also works. Available online.

  9. I tried both Neutrogena T-gel from iHerb and Selsun selenium sulfide. Neutrogena is OK but still leaves some flakes even after finishing the whole bottle. Selsun is stronger and works only after using it twice for me. If you look for more natural option, Neutrogena is the better option, I think. If you look for quick solution, Selsun it is.
Another alternative is オクト, Japanese product, but it didn’t work at all for me.

I brought Selsun from my country but they seem to have similar one in Amazon for higher price.

  10. If you’re generally shopping around, the Japanese for anti-dandruff is フケ防止, or at least will mention フケ someone on the label.

If you want to try a common brand that won’t break the bank, try メリット (merit). It helped me decently well, not 100% clear got got my dandruff well under the embarrassing threshold. If you need the heavy duty but pricier stuff, check out オクト: they come in lime green and aqua blue bottles and you generally find them stocked next to the other medical shampoos.

  11. I didn’t think it was a common problem 😮 for me it stopped when I started using the expensive shampoo and treatment my hair salon recommended. If there are other options I’d recommend to try those first but personally I don’t think I’ll ever go back to cheaper shampoos

  12. I go to my local dermatologist, they give me medicated shampoo and some other medicines that help. It’s pretty affordable (something like 4000 yen overall for appt & a pretty big bottle of shampoo & some other meds). I suggest doing the same thing and just finding a place that’s local and convenient for you to regularly go to.
In my experience this is the only thing that helped. You should get some samples to try out first before you make any purchases. At least that’s what happened in my case.

  13. My ex co-workers bought a filter for their shower to make the water less hard and it solved the problem for them. It could also be stress, change of climate or nutritional related.

  14. I had this problem when I first moved to Japan — I didn’t realize I would scratch my head and ear when I was nervous, particularly when I was worried about money, and so it turns out that was the only problem, a sort of manic habit. I thought I had dandruff for years and it turns out it was just this. Even a gentle scratch and my poor scalp gets it. Later it manifested itself in me biting my nails etc. Silly but I never noticed

    As for medical treatments:

At donki they sell a white and blue bottle shampoo that is good for your scalp, forgot the same. It was cheap and helps manage and heal

  15. I used to use no chemical no smell shampoo that you can find in Donki or some supermarkets and that always worked for me.

  16. Go to the 皮膚科 doctor. Honestly, all you can buy in 薬屋 is a crap.

  17. It is your pillow cover. The bacteria that provokes dandruff loves humidity and warmth and your pillow is filled with it. Wash its cover as often as you can, you should see fast results (it worked for me).
