Adding pronounciation to kanjis in posts

Hey guys,

I started studying Japanese 3 months ago and I like this subreddit and seeing other people learning about the language.

However, I think it would be a good idea to add the pronounciation (in hiragana) for words written in kanji. I’m not 100% sure how we should go about it but it would help me and probably others at least learning a new word and being able to google about it etc.

For example, write with the pronounciation in parentheses :

漢字(かんじ)

would work, but it could make a whole post really long and tedious. Let me know what you guys think! 🙂

  1. No offense, but the right side of the page explains how to add furigana for users who want to do so, but your method works for isolated words – though probably most users use Yomichan or Jisho or something if they do not recognize the Kanji. Those more advanced really do not need the readings of the Kanji for discussions – considering an OPs level determines most of my responses, but if not directly responding I know a few people who are advanced and it is a waste of our collective time to add furigana/kana after Kanji.

  2. it says on the sidebar how to actually do this

    [漢字](#fg “かんじ”)

but no one reads that of course

also IDK if it works on all devices, I’m windows/firefox/old.reddit and it works

EDIT if you get a popup dictionary like yomichan your problem also goes away

  3. Honestly, as a learner, I prefer to try and figure out what the kanji means / look them up myself without seeing the hiragana in order to piece together sentences. Can definitely be useful for more challenging words though 🙂

  4. I tend to write Romaji for things when I can, but anyone who wants to study Japanese seriously needs to make their computer do this with Yomichan or some other inline reader.

Not least because kana only is actually the most confusing thing possible for new learners as they cannot figure out when the word breaks are.

What you might contribute to the community is to make a guide laying out how to install Yomichan for the next user. Guides like this go out of date fast, and I am sure the one on the wiki for the sub is out of date.

  5. Simply download an addon for your browser (for Firefox it’s RikaiRebuilt, for Chrome RikaiKun)

  6. it’s nice that you’re thinking of others, please keep doing that

    unfortunately, this makes sentences unreadable

the solution is just to include pronunciations in some cases for early learners that haven’t figured out dictionaries yet, and others just need to learn to use appropriate tools anyways, since this wont exist on native material

  7. Thanks for the answers guys! It’s true that it would over complicate the sentences/posts and make some things unreadable. On desktop yomichan is pretty good but on mobile it can be annoying to try and copy/paste a single word from a whole post. I agree with all of your points though

  8. if you cant use a dictionary youll NEVER make it. actually youll never make it anyway but thats besides the point
