Long Term Visa: Conversion from Single entry to multiple entry.

So I got a long-term work visa (5 years) that says single entry. A friend tells me I need to get it converted to a multiple-entry visa at the Ministry of Justice if I want to exit Japan and re-enter at any point using this visa.

Has anyone else gone through this process and can share what the procedure was?

  1. You don’t have a visa, you have a residency status. Visa is used only to enter the country and in your case acquire residency. You do not need multiple entry visa either (I don’t know if there is one?)

What you need is a special or normal re entry permit. Special re entry permit is just a paper filled out on the airport before your departure. You keep the paper in your passport, you show permit and zariyu card when you come back to the immigration officer, and you are allowed to enter Japan as a resident. Special re entry permit allows you to return within one year from leaving Japan.

Normal re entry permit allows you to stay outside of country for longer (5 years I think?), but it’s not relevant for you I guess.

Keep in mind that if you forget to fill out re entry permit, your zariyu card will be invalid after you leave Japan.
