Laptop repair in Tokyo?

Heyy.

Today the screen of my Acer Nitro 5 started to flick and some gray bars appeared at the top of the screen. I went to PC Doctor in Shibuya and the laptop was working fine again but they told me that if I wanted, the diagnosis for the laptop would cost me 2,200 yen and it would take 3 days or 7,700 for the “express diagnosis”. Besides, the guy told me that it was probably related to the LCD Display Cable because the Display per se is not broken or damaged; his estimate cost was 15,000 – 25,000 yen for the cable.

Does anyone knows a cheaper or faster place? I really need the laptop for school and some other documents. I don’t have the tools to change by myself the screen (I say this because a lot of people have commented that on previous posts), I just want a trustworthy place with cheaper costs than the one from PCDoctor.

Thanks in advance.

  1. The prices sound reasonable for Japan.

pretty much any repair shop is gonna start at 10k minimum just to take a look at it, and more to actually fix.

You can diy it if you want by looking up the cable part number and ordering it from AliExpress or eBay. That’s basically what the shop is gonna do anyway.

Or you can get/find a cheap monitor.

  2. That’s pretty fair pricing and I don’t really think you’ll get anything cheaper.

  3. Yep, likely the display cable. It’s possible that just reseating it could fix the issue.

Before you do that though, possible workaround: set the refresh rate to 60Hz rather than 144 Hz. There is a small chance this would provide a fix / workaround.

  4. I once accidentally struck my laptop screen with my knees. I took the laptop to an appliance store where they sell laptops. The repair cost 30k, half the price of the laptop. Thought about just buying a new laptop instead but I recalled that software would incur further costs. 15k-25k seems reasonable.

  5. As soon as you leave, they’re searching your model number and problem on youtube

The cable might just be loose. If its not too scary for you, try reseating the ribbon

If you’ve never opened a computer, it’s not terribly hard but you may want to take photos of every step of the way in case you panic about how to put it back together

It’s also been raining lately, consider humidity damage as well. The home remedy fix for this is to submerge your laptop in a closed tub of rice and put a lid or saran wrap the box. The rice will suck the water out, works great if you wet your phone as well. On rainy days I would put my laptop in a grocery bag inside my messenger bag just in case
