Hi all
I’m finishing JET as a 3rd year, my 3 years instructor visa will expire the same day as my employment contract date, so I will be changing over to a temporary visitor visa to travel in japan before leaving Japan.
I’ve done some research but want to confirm my understanding on the matter and if others have gone through something similar.
1 – Is a Temporary Visitor Visa considered a resident?
My understanding is that a temporary visitor visa is not resident status therefore cannot/not obligated to register for National Health Insurance.
2 – Do I need to submit a moving in notice if staying with a friend temporarily? – as a temporary visitor visa holder, I cannot have an address registered with the city town hall, therefore don’t have to submit a moving in notice.
The temporary visitor visa is exactly the same case as someone who is visiting and travelling in Japan so I want to make sure I’m not required to register for health insurance or pay for anything unnecessary.
If you have information or websites I can refer to, please give reference so I can check it.

I am not 100% certain as never been in this sitch myself (so someone please Do correct me if I’m wrong) but I don’t think you will get a tourist visa/temporary visit visa. I think you will be given an up to 3 month ‘Designated activities’ visa.
If so then yea… you’d still be a resident, just unable to work/study (although you can legally job hunt in Japan on that visa)
