  1. For the millionth time… masks were not normal before covid. At any one time maybe 2% wore one. Don’t take my word for it, there is no shortage of pre-covid videos and photos.

    Japanese who are still wearing masks are overwhelmingly doing so because they are worried about what others may think (one source was Fuji TV news on 3/15 had a segment saying 90% of people wearing a mask would take it off when others around them do). Not wearing a mask will eventually reach a tipping point and the majority will come off.

    Masks have become a visualization of the strong social pressure to conform. It has nothing to do with health or fashion. The fact that most Japanese abroad don’t wear masks is evidence that it is not a personal choice.
