Hi, I recently made a post about visa expiration and student status, asking if I can really stay until December 2023 if my semester ends in July 2023. Everyone had very different answers and the Immigration services finally answered my mail so I thought I would share.
“This is Information Center for ”Immigration Services Agency”
In regards to your inquiry, we will answer as follows.
Actually, regardless of the expiration date of the visa/card, once your relationship with the hosting school is finished/ you graduated, you are permitted to stay in Japan for 3 months or if the expiration date is earlier than this, you need to leave Japan before your visa expire.
Thank you.”

Thanks for the information! In other words 3 months or residence card expiration date, whichever is the closest. Will keep in mind.
Very helpful, thank you for sharing.
Oh wow, that’s absolutely not what I was told by the international department at my university and the people at Osaka immigration back when I was a student, but thanks for the update!
