I think you can buy a Natto that is as clean as possible (no fish, or anything), and use it as a starter culture.
In my supermarket they sell Natto in straw…
search for 納豆菌 on amazon and you can find starters there
You can buy obscure stuffs like that at Amazon JP. Just search for 納豆菌.

Just use natto. It’s like yogurt.
Just use a packet of natto that you like the taste of. It’s a live culture.
