  1. When I was in Iceland partying with some locals I was Couchsurfing with, they took me to real hole in the kebab shop that served whale meat skewers for next to nothing. They told me the same company that does whale watching tours was also involved in hunting.

    I’ve occasionally seen whale meat at izakaya here, and it’s usually pretty cheap which leads me to assume it’s probably imported from somewhere like Iceland. The “bad stuff” (e.g. illegally poached endangered species from Antarctica for “scientific research”) isn’t readily available on menus but I bet you can get for a huge sum it if you know who to ask.

  2. No big deal. I have always seen whale meat on sale here since the 90s. Most is imported from Scandinavia. You can sometimes get local whale meat up in Hokkaido but not a lot.

  3. I’ve tried it twice in Japan in both sashimi and katsu style. It tastes like fishy beef, and is totally not worth it, even though it’s incredibly cheap.
