All Black leather converse chucks for teaching

Would a pair of all black leather converse chucks be acceptable footwear when paired with suit pants, shirt tie etc for teaching in Japan? I struggle to find comfortable business shoes but not sure if they would meet the dress code at schools.

  1. You’ll be wearing indoor shoes, most teachers wear slippers, slip ons, gym shoes. I’ve worked both in the public and private sector of teaching and I’ve seen a wild variety. Ask your school if your not sure.

  2. It will probably be fine. Indoor shoes seem to be a special case. I’ve seen people wearing white Nike Air Force Ones.

Edit: some public schools don’t allow sandals or slip ons because you won’t be able to run fast in an emergency

  3. Honestly, just wear them. Don’t ask anyone. If they tell you off, then apologize profusely and get something else.

For small things like this that do not harm or embarrass anyone (except for potentially yourself) it’s better to ask for forgiveness rather than permission.

  4. As long as it’s all black. No one would notice it and say anything. I wear all black ultraboosts with my suit.

  5. My experience as an ALT:

Them: Dress code is a smart shirt, trousers, tie preferably, tidy appearance

Day 1: guys walks in with a multi colored tracksuit and white trainers

    Me: Who’s that?

    Them: Mr Ichikawa. The principle.

  6. When I was an ALT, I asked another ALT what the dress code was and he advised, spot the worst dressed Japanese teacher and dress better than him.

  7. As long as your uwabaki are closed toed and have a back to them, you’re fine. And to not cause trouble, make sure the soles don’t leave black scuff marks on the floors.

  8. I showed up wearing all red converse high tops to a new school once because I forgot my regular shoes and they were all I had in my car at the time. Vice Principal was like “Nice shoes, I got them in black at home.”

  9. Teachers will commute in sneakers and wear any kind of slides inside the school. I’ve never seen so many grown men in full suits with crocs.

  10. If you’re gonna work in a public elementary school chances are you’re gonna change them for more comfortable indoor shoes. I use ballet flats in the school then change to my gym shirt once I arrive. my colleagues use sandals and gym shoes too.
