So I am from another country applying for Japan and I have received a few opportunities. I was wondering if they will contact my former employers and ask about me?
There must be a language barrier issue so I’m conflicted if they will or they won’t. Just curious about the hiring practice in Japan.

**Do employers generally do a background check?**

You on bad terms with your previous employers? Lol
It depends on the companies. In my last 10 years in Japan, I received dozens of offers, only 5 of those required background check. 3 big tech, 1 US company, and 1 Japanese company in fintech.
Most companies don’t even use references outside of shinsotsu. You’ll be fine.
Almost never.
There are many legal restrictions on what information can be disclosed so it’s not so invasive as in the US.
I’ve only ever had a U.S.-HQ company request one. Calls to references are normal, but basically limited to start and end date and title confirmation.
