Weekend Stupid Questions Thread – 25 March 2023

As per usual, feel free to ask any silly stupid questions or not so silly stupid questions that you haven’t had a chance to ask here. Be kind to those that do and try to answer without downvoting. Please keep criticism and snide remarks out of the thread.

  1. I see that much of N. America and Europe are seeing northern lights in the norther regions. Is this possible in Japan, like in Hokkaido?

  2. How much would it cost to ship a high-value antique framed painting (140x80cm) from Tokyo to Europe including proper packaging and insurance? Would we need to pay any taxes/duties? Any idea of recent shipping times?

  3. Probably a longshot, but worth a try.

Are there any type 1 diabetics in japan that gave birth here? I have a few questions about labor and delivery with diabetes.

  4. How am I supposed to clean my washlet style toilet attachment? Finding some confusing and conflicting info online.

  5. want to go to Camelot tonight but don’t understand the entrance fees, to get in cheap we have to enter before 9pm?

  6. How would I clearly say “I want to get my ears *re*-pierced”? All I can find is the most basic vocabulary, and I can just imagine some terrified part-timer standing there at the jewelry shop while I try to explain that my holes grew over.

  7. Where in Tokyo is the easiest place to check your blood pressure? In other countries they have the machines for anyone to use in pharmacies.

  8. Network people, I’m building a house in Chiba and want to surf the web at *lightning speed*. I’m looking at providers that offer 10Gbps down in the area on [kakaku](https://kakaku.com/bb/ranking/?bb_houseType=1&bb_pref=12&bb_downspeed=5) and plan on getting a quality router, but other than that I’m lost on what sort of options I should be looking for. Any quick tips?

Edit: Looks like I’ll need to use at least Cat 6A for 10Gbps

  9. I feel like this is a very sad stupid question, but: how do you make friends here? I feel like my (lack of) Japanese proficiency is really hindering my ability to interact with people beyond those I work with, who all speak English. Are there meet-up websites, classes I could take, English-speaking book clubs I could join, or maybe even book clubs for *very* beginner Japanese speakers? Or something else entirely?

How do I find any of this stuff?

  10. I have an elderly family member coming to Japan soon and I’m curious if there are convenient places in central Tokyo where I might be able to rent a wheelchair for them for just a few hours? I’m thinking it would be helpful when going to heavy walking tourist spots.

  11. Is there some sort of English tourism/ translator service you can call for help here?

I lived in another Asian country and each city had its own number for tourists to translate for you or provide advice on things to see.

Is there anything close to this?

  12. shinkansen related

my colleague bought me a non-reserved Sakura ticket from Hakata to Osaka, but the time is 830 am

am i able to enter the gate or take a train later than the stated time?

  13. Any recommendations for shelves/wall hanging equipment that won’t damage a rental wall?

Trying to hang up some photos and small odds and ends.
