Dependents with a student visa

Hi there, I’m really interested in going to a mid-term japanese course but I really want to know if I could take my 18y.o son with me as a dependent, the authorities have any issues with him being over 18?
Thanks in advance

Ps:I’m a single dad and he’s studying his career virtually if that helps

  1. Dependents are only allowed if you’re enrolled in a Graduate School, University, or Junior college. You can’t apply for a dependent visa if you’re going to a Japanese Language School. Dependent just needs to be legally married spouse or blood related child / legally adopted child.

In order to bring your son over: You need to already be in Japan, obtain a COE for your dependent from city hall, mail it to your dependent, and have them fill out the application for a dependent visa with your COE.

  2. As of this year 18 year olds are now legally adults. You are not able to sponsor adult children for dependent visas.
