That’s sad… Part of japanese history and culture heritage is going to be extinct it seems
I expect there was a corresponding increase in the number of hangure. The yakuza system of being a registered member, having a HQ on public record etc. could only thrive in a time now long past.
Overall though violent crime is down dramatically over the last 10, 20, 30 years… even if some of it were accountable to a possible decline in detection rates, Japan is safer than ever.
It’s just that the police has finally started to cracking down on them instead of seeing them as “necessary evils”. That and/or they’re getting older and they’re slowly dying.
Can they not probe them even more deeply?
It sounds like they’re still far from bottoming out.
The Yakuza is like the Lawn Bowling club of criminal organizations. It’s rapid aging and completely at the mercy of the police. If you do insist on living a life of crime it would be much wiser go freelance or join a decentralized crime ring
