Reading practice

Is there any source of reading practice that I can start with furigana on all kanji, and then have it not appear on certain words when I think I’ve memorized those pretty well?

  1. NHK News Easy works exactly like that. Erin’s challenge has both kanji and kana version, and japonin’s blog has both plain version and version with readings in parentheses.

https://www3.nhk.or.jp/news/easy/ (Easier versions of the news, with links to the full version if you are up to the challenge)
https://www.erin.ne.jp/en/ (online audio-visual course, but has ‘manga’ version)

Generally speaking though, I’d recommend installing a plugin that lets you get pop-up readings, and then you can check any unknown kanji on any web page. Rikaikun and Yomichan can both do this.

(Edit: Actually, maybe NHK doesn’t work exactly like that… it lets you turn furigana off an on and the click of a button at the top of each article, but re-reading I think you’re asking for custom furigana that knows your vocabulary level. I’ve never seen personalized, limited furigana like that.)

  2. Not entirely sure about taking furigana off words you know in a pick and choose style but if you’re on IOS “Easy Japanese News やさい日本語, or just todai, but they have it set up where you can read news depending on what level you’re on and you can click on vocab and see the pronunciation, level it is, definition and whatnot
