Moving back to Japan questions

I hold dual citizenship in both Japan and Canada, I was born in Japan but I moved to Canada at a young age. I’m currently attending uni here in Canada and I’m going on a study abroad to Japan through my university this fall and I’m wondering what the whole procedure is for Japanese nationals who are I guess moving back to Japan (but temporarily)?

All of the info I’ve been given is for foreigners (ie. registering for a residence card, visa), but from my understanding Japanese nationals don’t need a residence card. So when I arrive to Japan, move into my dorms, and go to the city office, what do I give them to register my new address and enroll in the National Health Insurance? Is my passport enough or do I need to do something else before? Also, is the “my number” thing also just for foreigners or do Japanese nationals also receive it?

  2. You will have to do everything a foreign national would, minus the immigration bits.

Of note, you will need to enter Japan on your Japanese passport.

At city hall you will register your address as a Japanese national.

To do so you will generally need to present your passport and 本籍. If you have previously ben enrolled in the pension service, you may need to also present your pension book.

All residents have a MyNumber so you will have one as well. Whether you apply for the actual card or not is up to you, but it will act as an easily obtained form of official photo ID.

  3. All you have to do is to enter the country with your Japanese passport, then go to the city/ward office of where you will be living to enroll into National Health Insurance and National Pension.
